Why see Melancholy Play?

Love, Whimsy, And Melancholy All Wrapped Up Into One

This June, Illinois is coming to Des Moines as Tony nominee Sarah Ruhl's musical Melancholy Play: A Chamber Musical hits the Iowa Stage Theatre Company for a limited run. Originally a standard play, the work was adapted into a chamber musical with the artistry of writer and musician Todd Almond in 2012 in New York. The lead role of the melancholic and lusted-after Tillie will be played by Iowa Stage's very own Maggie Schmitt, with Emily Davis directing. A meaningful and comedic story, observing the trials of depression, and the power that relationships have in overturning the melancholy, there's even an almond!
